Introduction

Carbon dioxide fire suppression system consists of:
One or more bank of cylinders storage containers to supply CO2 extinguishing agent
Flexible discharge bends or hoses connect the cylinders to piping manifold
The manifold in turn distributes the agent into the piping network
Nozzles regulate the flow of CO2 into the protected area Reducing the oxygen content from the normal 21% down to 14% will extinguish most surface fires thus requiring a 34% CO2 concentration level. Depending upon the application a significant amount of cooling is also provided. Rapid expansion of the snow to gas reduces the ambient temperature in the hazardous area which accelerates the extinguishing process and retards reignition.
CO2 is stored as a liquid under pressure, usually 57 bars at 20°C, in high pressure steel containers. The CO2 system is actuated by different modes:
Electric solenoid
Pneumatic
Local manual release (at control head)
Remote manual release
When the system is actuated, the closed valve opens, allowing the container vapour pressure to propel the liquid CO2 via the distribution pipe work to discharge through specially designed nozzles where it readily vapourises resembling a cloud of steam. This clouding is due to moisture in the air becoming frozen as a result of the extremely low temperature of the expanding CO2.

Introduction

For many years, people recognized Halon 1301 as one of the most effective fire suppression agents for a diverse array of applications. It quickly extinguished all major classes of fires. It was especially effective in high-value asset protection situations where it caused no residual damage to delicate equipment, in addition Halon 1301 systems were utilized for both occupied and unoccupied spaces.
But Halon 1301 was thought to have significant environmental consequences due to its potential contribution to depleting the stratospheric ozone layer.
New Halon production has now ceased in accordance with the latest revision of the Montreal Protocol. With the phase out of Halon 1301 production, the quest for a replacement resulted in the introduction of a number of clean fire suppression agents to the marketplace. FE-227° stands alone as the leading choice of high-value asset fire protection.
NAFFCO engineered FE-227° system is the best Halon 1301 replacement agent with zero ozone depletion potential (ODP) suitable for total flooding. FE-227° is an effective total flooding agent suitable for use on Class A surface burning fires, Class B flammable liquid fires and fires on electrical equipment. On a weight of agent basis FE-227° is a very effective gaseous extinguishing agent. The FE-227° extinguishing concentration for normal heptane (cup burner method) is approximately 5.8% by volume. The minimum design concentration for total flooding applications is 7% in accordance with NFPA 2001.

A comprehensive range of foam proportioning and delivery devices for protection of high risk applications such as storage tanks at oil refineries, petrochemical complexes, chemical industries and warehouses is a speciality of Volcano.

Introduction

The wet pipe sprinkler system is the simplest and most common type of fire sprinkler installation. This system employs automatic and closed type sprinkler heads, which are connected to a water-filled piping system. The sprinklers contain either a heat-responsive glass bulb or fusible element that prohibits water from dis-charging from the sprinkler's orifice. The water is contained until such time as the heat from the fire activates the element, causing its release, allowing the water to discharge to the heat source.
Wet systems are frequently installed in factories, warehouses, office buildings, retail stores, and residences where the potential for freezing does not exist.

Firex 200 Operation

The FE-227° clean agent gas extinguishant is stored commonly in welded mild steel cylindrical containers which are designed and manufactured to BS 5045 Part 2 for FE-227° use and pressurized with dry nitrogen to 25 bars at 20°C.
FE-227° automatic fire suppression system common components are the following:
Agent cylinder
Release panel
Discharge valve
Detectors
Actuator
Manual release
Discharge nozzle
Sounder
Piping network
Flashers
FE-227° extinguishes a fire quickly by discharging in 10 seconds or less. The agent removes heat and breaks up the fire at molecular level. Common operation of FE-227° is automatic. However, manual release also can be done.
1 - A fire in the protected area is sensed by strategically located detectors and a signal is sent to the control unit. 2 - The control unit performs a series of actions: shutting down ventilation systems and equipment, sounding alarms and starting the discharge of FE-227° into the protected area.
3 - The FE-227° agent stored in agent containers is propelled through piping and nozzles into the protected area.
4 - FE-227° discharges as a gas to all areas of the protected area, reaching a 7% concentration in ten seconds and quickly suppressing the fire. No fire, no mess, back in business.

Liquid Level Indicator

Description :
The liquid level indicator is a simple manually operated device to determine the clean agent liquid level in vertically mounted agent storage containers.
Operation:
A magnet equipped float moves with the liquid level along the unit stem. Level readout is obtained by simply removing the protective cap and pulling out a calibrated tape until magnetic interlock with float is felt. With the tape in this position, the reading is obtained at the point where the tape emerges from the unit housing. When the liquid level is determined, the reading is then located on a chart and corresponding clean agent weight is read. Accurate readings can be obtained over +40°F to -90°F (+4.4°C to 32.2°C) temperature range.

GCA - Gas Cartridge Actuator

Description :
The Gas Cartridge Actuator (GCA) provides the necessary pressure to fully open all NAFFCO FE-227 clean agent containers utilizing a fast acting rupture disc assembly. The GCA consists of stainless steel body containing two sets of bridge wires and charge of smokeless powder. Operation of the GCA occurs when electric current is sent through the bridge wires causing the smokeless powder to ignite. This practice, in turn, generates the necessary pressure to open the rupture disc and discharge the agent in the clean agent container.
The GCA is not an explosive device and cannot be used as a detonator. Operating time for the GCA is 10 milliseconds. Operating temperature range for the GCA is +32°F to 130°F (O°C to +54°C). The GCA is designed to operate all NAFFCO clean agent cylinders with 1" to 2°" valves and also containers with 3" valves with single disc pack. This device is designed to operate by two methods of actuation:
1. Electrical input from interface firing module through an ARM
2. Input from an optional independent manual actuator

ARM -Agent Release Module

Description :
ARM - Agent Release Module, in conjuction with a release control panel, allows the electrical actuators used with the agent containers to be wired in "parallel". This configuration substantially increases the overall reliability of the clean agent releasing circuit. With series-wired actuators, that same incident would incapacitate the entire system. Utilizing parallel-wired actuators, that same incident would incapacitate only that individual clean agent container; all would still be active.
ARM is compatible with either class A or class B wiring. When ARM is used in a class A wiring configuration, the resulting system is the most reliable available for today's fire protection

Description :
The function of the Volcano engineered discharge nozzle, in a fire extinguishing system, is to distribute the clean agent in a uniform, predetermined pattern and concentration. The nozzles are designed to complete the discharge of clean agent in 10 seconds, or less, when installed within the design limitations and the flow calculation computer program.
Volcano engineered discharge nozzles are available in sizes of 3/8" (10 mm) through 2" (50 mm). Each nozzle is available in 180 and 360 degree discharge patterns.
The discharge nozzle size refers to the size of schedule 40 or 80 steel pipe to which it can be connected. The nozzle discharge orifices are drilled perpendicular to the center line of the threads and discharge on a horizontal axis.
Nozzle orifices are available in a wide range of sizes to provide accurate clean agent flow results. All nozzles have been tested for their ability to discharge the clean agent under extreme conditions.
As an option, deflector plates are available for use where sensitive ceiling tiles must be protected.

Dry Pipe Sprinkler System

dry pipe sprinkler system is a system which employs automatic and closed type sprinkler heads, which are connected to a piping system containing compressed air or nitrogen, rather than water. This type of system is used where the area being protected will be unable to maintain a constant,year-round temperature of at least 40 degrees farenheit.Water would freeze in the piping, rendering the system inoperable, even causing severe damage should the system components crack or break. The water supply for the system is held back by the dry pipe valve, which will only release the water after the evacuation of the air pressure from the system(such as the operation of a sprinkler). The water will then flow into the piping system, and out of the opened sprinklers.
Dry pipe systems are frequently installed in areas subject to freezing temperatures, such as unheated storage areas, coolers and freezers, unheated parking garages, and loading docks.
